World War I Summary:

     As the World War was triggered, many Europe nations started to wait for the war, but were waiting for the right moment. The American Imperialism was perfect until other Europeans started to blame and fight other nations, take their colonies, or kill one of the people who are important to the nation. The proof is how all the European countries are blaming one another for the long war going. Other people would have thought it was scary since none of the countries could stop the war from going on and as the citizens were killed.  As you can see on the background some people are suggesting to do a treaty called the peace of Europe. The artist would think that if the European leaders could not stop the war would never end, unless a nation strong enough can stop them. The figure that is pointing at peace of Europe which is evidence that something is going to stop World War I. The only issue is who was the one who wants the war to go on. Most of them started to point to Germany then Germany pointed to Russia. The technique they used in the political cartoon is labeling. They labeled the soldiers based on which countries they belong to and the island which none of them can see the peace of Europe is not far away.  The last technique is irony. The leaders are fighting while they cannot suspect who is to blame for fighting or that there would soon be peace in Europe. After World War I ended, Germany was punished very harshly that they had lost most of their most important pride in their home.

The Roosevelt Corollary Summary

Roosevelt Corollary Summary:

     The Roosevelt Corollary was to protect Panama from eastern powers who wanted to influence people in the western hemisphere. The issue was Europe wanting to impact Panama which Panama doesn’t want, so they ask for Roosevelt and Americas help to defend them. I will tell you one technique being used, this is labeling. The cartoonist labeled the big stick as the New Diplomacy, Roosevelt holding a paper that was called nation, and all of the countries offering something to Roosevelt. The other technique is exaggeration. The exaggerated Roosevelt’s size to be about half of Europe while the people who were offering him goods were small and tiny. As you can see the cartoonist’s message was that we were going to defend Panama from Europe, who wanted to go and influence them. The proof of that is how Panama is begging Roosevelt to keep them away from Europe’s influence while the Europeans is begging him to let them through to Panama. He uses the big stick as a policy to stop Europe from interfering in the Western hemisphere. While other people opinions, especially American, they would have thought it was right to protect Panama since they had the canal. Europeans would want our help as they beg and sacrifice some of their goods just to be able to influence Panama, but Roosevelt would still not allow this. The American Imperialism was shown as Roosevelt was showing that we will not interfere with Europe problems again. Roosevelt was in between Panama and Europe as a way to defend Panama.
Even though Europe caused problems, we were able to still have great trade with no battles.

Panama Canal Summary

Panama Canal Summary:

    The cartoonist’s message is how the people who wanted money for the built of the canal. They triggered the anger in Columbia which where we fought won and earned Panama’s freedom almost like killing two birds with one stone. One of the techniques they used was symbolism. They used it by the paper the man in suite is carrying the bill, he triggers the egg which is Columbia, that hatches into Panama, and that leads to Panama Canal for Roosevelt. The second technique is labeling. It is used when labeling the egg, Columbia and the chicken Panama Republic. The issue was to provide Panama freedom from Columbia so that they can create a canal and use it for boats. Other people would have thought of it as sneaky and smart because of how it would let us grow wider in the southwest. Another reason would be that it would be how Panama also gets to join the politics in some sort of way plus be able to trade more frequently with us. The American Imperialism was not used and we made poor decision to anger a war with Columbia which wanted nothing of that sort.

Spanish-American War Summary

Spanish-American War Summary:

     The Spanish-American War started because of Cuba rebelling towards Spain which troubled U.S Trade with Cuba. The issue is if Spain could not respect Cubans had they should go back to Spain. The words on the bottom also proves what I believe, it says “If he can’t respect our flag, send him where he belongs.”  The illustrator’s message is that Spain could not give what Cuba needed they should not interfere with Cuba again. The picture of the man being thrown of back to his home must be a soldier who treated Cubans and Americans harshly. Americans and Cubans would have thought it was perfect to stop the Spanish Empire and take some of their colonies. As the sentence says if you can’t respect citizens, especially the ones which have good trade with America, we would have to go to war. The technique that is being used is analogy. They use it as the way they threw the soldier back, but now days we would just leave them alone unless they killed or destroyed a special or important place. The other technique is exaggeration. The way they threw the soldier off the ship and the place where Spain and Cuba are to close since Cuba is farther away from Spain. The American Imperialism wasn’t put in use, since we interfered with another nation’s problem. The proof is the way we kicked the soldier of the ship almost like it was meant as a way we were going to fight. After we had won the Spanish-American War, the Spain Empire ended and a new era began.

The Great Depression Summary

The Great Depression Summary:

     The Great Depression has started since the end of World War I many citizens started to lose their jobs, the stock market was going down, and there were many people I debt. Issues about Hoover not helping out with the Great Depression and giving his seat as president forcibly by the citizens when the election for the new president. You can see how he gives Roosevelt all the problems of the Great Depression. American was destroyed as many people panicked and starved. This was said by the responsibility that Hoover gave to Roosevelt. The artist’s note was that when Roosevelt had won the presidential election he was given the task to stop what Hoover could not do. The baby in the basket was like the responsibility that Roosevelt had to take care of, it said all the problems that caused the Great Depression and had to be fixed most importantly. The method that was used labeling. The illustrator labeled what the baby said as the problems resembling economic problems, farmer problems, war debts, unemployment, bank problems, tariff, and budget. The other method was symbolism. They symbolized the baby as the responsibility that is put in front of Roosevelt door to take care of. There was American Imperialism when they have not interfered with any country and is helping the citizens to get out of the Great Depression. The Great Depression did not end very soon and a few of people did not like how Roosevelt and FDR was doing too little or too much we had gone past the wall when World War II started.

Annexation of Hawaii Summary

Annexation of Hawaii Summary:

     An annexation of Hawaii was caused by Queen Liliuokalani limited planters influence to Hawaiians. The issue of the annexation of Hawaii is America wanting to teach Hawaii not to tell them what to do. The evidence is on the bottom of the cartoon it says, “Uncle Sam- you fellows will please stand back bmk while I try these oyster sandwiches myself.” Others people would have thought it was right to annex Hawaii of the way they treated us. The way Uncle Sam’s fork says U.S. and Uncle Sam looks like he is going “fork” them as a punishment, while the other units of U.S are about to punish them. This does not show American Imperialism that much because they interfere and almost caused war with Hawaii, but they did have a battle with the planters. Also how on the political cartoon is treating Uncle Sam as a bad person who does injustice things. The cartoonist’s message is to show us how we had punished Hawaii by annexing them. The provided information is by how Uncle Sam is using the fork to grab Hawaii as our “reward” when winning the battle. Exaggerating is one of the techniques the cartoonist used. They exaggerated by using the fork that says U.S. picking on Hawaii as the annexation. The second technique is labeling. Labeling because the cartoonist labeled the fork Uncle Sam is holding, and on the bottom it kind of tells us what he says to the people he stops from moving. As Hawaii was annexed Queen Liliuokalani was excised from her royal duties.

 Purchase of Alaska Summary:

    The purchase of Alaska was thought to be problem to America, since Americans thought it was just a “block of ice,” but they were wrong since it gave us raw material like, timber, minerals, and oil. The cartoonist’s message is Steward adopting Alaska and Russia’s ruler giving Steward Alaska. I can tell by how Steward is carrying Alaska on a carriage that is given from Russia’s ruler and on the carriage there is a title that says treaty. As you can see the issue is “Steward’s Icebox” being carried by a treaty that explains that Steward gave Russia $7.2 million. I can support this by how in the background there is a bag of money which was traded for Alaska. Other peoples’ opinion was that they would be disappointed about how Steward spent 7.2 million dollars for Alaska, which Americans thought it was just an iceberg, but they were wrong; it had raw materials such as timber, mineral and plentiful oil. One of the techniques the cartoonist is labeling. He/she used it on the carriage as a treaty, the other was the block of ice since Alaska was mostly covered in ice and snow, last is on the background you may not be able to see the numbers but it is the cost of Alaska. The other technique is symbolism that is used in the political cartoon. The evidence is the carriage used to support the deal to sell and give Alaska to America, the ice in the carriage is called Russian America which is Alaska, and the bag of money in the background as the deal and money Russia earned. It shows American-Imperialism by how we have not involved ourselves, but just bought a land which was on sale. Alaska was bought and everyone stopped criticizing Steward for the useless land, which was actually useful and was now a big land filled with the most important tools for industries, economy, and citizens.

Open Door Policy Summary

Open Door Policy Summary:

     This political cartoon of the Open Door Policy is about how China has opened their doors to other nations. The issue is that America has asked Philippine to let China open the door to nations who want their materials and gather their influence and other countries influence. As you can see Uncle Sam the symbol of America larger than the other nation symbols and the key of the door of China, because we had been able to let China open their doors by the help of the Philippines. The cartoonist’s message as you can see shows on the top of the door the name China encrypted, the Chinese greeting us with a smile, and the large landscape of China. It tells us that all the nations were now able to come and share land with countries, borrow or sell their materials, and let all influence in. Other people may think that it was a good sign peace, because nation’s “Uncle Sam” and our Uncle Sam were able to come and see how China was like and we all could have a great alliance. The Open Door Policy shows symbolism, because of how it shows a door to China, nation’s “Uncle Sams,” including ours, ready to enter China, the view of China, and its buildings. It also shows exaggerating, as how Uncle Sam is taller than the other Uncle Sams while he is holding the key of China, and is standing in front of the entrance. This shows American-Imperialism by how we have Uncle Sam is standing in the entrance to let people in. This was the moment alliances and trading with China.
